Product History & Development

The cultivation, processing and internal use of Cannabis had been prohibited in Canada from 1923 to 1998 with the exception of doing so under federal permit for reseach purposes. The Canadian public had lobbied for years to have low-THC Cannabis generally legalized once again to re-instate what had once been a thriving industry.

In 1998 the Canadian Federal Government introduced regulations allowing for the cultivation, processing and distribution of low-THC Cannabis. The laws were modified with the rationale that industrial products would be produced from the many square miles of prairies in the western provinces that were expected to be put into agricultural production through this legislation. It was expected that once again, Canada would produce fiber for rope, clothing and textiles- that the oil squeezed from the seeds as a by-product of the fiber crop would be utilized for paint thinners, lacquers, cosmetics and other varied industrial applications..

With the breaking news of this legislation came a ray of insight for the founders of MED MARIJUANA™. They had studied the healthy benefits of the Cannabis Sativa L. plant for many years and had hoped that at some point in their lives that they would have the opportunity to present those benefits to the public, legally, as a Natural Health Alternative.

Research into approved seed strains which would qualify for legal status while concurrently providing the sought after healthy properties, was undertaken. Most approved strains were for those purposes previously mentioned- production of various types of fiber and industrial oils but a few, research had shown, would provide the sought after health properties. Their seed was selected.

Growth environment is critical to maximize the health potential of Cannabis Sativa oils. The crop must be planted in an area with the correct soil structure, climate and season length. It was determined that the finest agricultural land in Canada, in the Province of Ontario, was ideal for these purposes. This is where MED MARIJUANA™ is grown. Interestingly, less than 5% of the legal Cannabis crops grown in the country are planted in this Province due to the high costs associated with the utilization of the finest agricultural land Canada has to offer. The bulk of domestic Cannabis is produced on huge tracts of the prairie Provinces, amidst the canola and wheat that is sown in such abundance there.

Seed cultivars and cultivation area determined, the founders moved on to research and develop optimum processing and delivery system technique. Preliminary testing results of selected oils were up to initial expectations and in 2001 the first SoftGel products were ready for shipment from a crop harvested that September.

The success of the SoftGel product was so overwhelming that research into other health related Cannabis products was immediately carried forward leading to a 2003 market introduction of MEDI-PAWS™ for total veterinary nutitional health. Research was ongoing into a Cannabis weight gain product for those suffering wasting diseases, an epidermal application for troublesome skin conditions and an equine product. Those products are now undergoing final testing and will be sequentially launched during 2005 and 2006.
